Summer 2008 Show:
5/27/08 - 8/08/08 Sisi Xu: "The Return"
We are living in a culture that is internationally connected with one another. It seems to be very easy to learn about other countries through internet, television, radio, and other media. However, there are many students, workers, and scholars who are unable to return to their home country for years because of political, immigration, education, or work reasons. Some may not be able to see their families for decades. This artist has been through a similar situation. This art show is to exhibit what she has seen after nine years away from her country and returned home for the first time this spring. Most of the photographs are in the living memory of her home town since she left. There were many changes during these years.
The piece entitled “Door,” is a photograph taken from a traditional Chinese house, which was built in the 1800s. It symbolizes the opportunity people want to find stepping outside of their home country, especially during the early 21st century. Throughout all these photographs, the artist uses metaphors to express the conflicting emotion of leaving home.
The artist would like to invite viewers to become submerged in the photographs and connect with the emotion of leaving home and treasuring every single moment of the return.
