Future Being Planned for the TSUAfter 35 years of service to Cal State Fullerton and decades of significant student enrollment growth, a major study is now underway to chart future plans for the Titan Student Union and its services. ASI has hired a professional facility planning firm to conduct a feasibility study that may lead to a future expansion of the student union building and a revamp of the facility's offerings. Work on the study began this February and will continue through April. As part of this effort CSUF students will be asked to share their thoughts and ideas on how to best improve and update the TSU. Focus groups, stakeholder meetings, and a campus-wide student survey are three of the main tools that will be used to reach out to students as part of the campus conversation on how the TSU can best serve future Titans. In addition to collecting student input and feedback, the firm conducting the feasibility study will also be reviewing the facility's use patterns, data from meeting room and event space bookings, food court transactions, financial data, and other available information to understand where the current student union is under serving the university community and which aspects of the program deserve the greatest priority for future improvements. The student union originally opened in 1976 and was later expanded in 1992.While various small scale space improvement projects have taken place over the years, no major expansion in TSU space or services has taken place in the past 20 years. During this same two decades, the campus student enrollment has grown by approximately 50 percent. Students interested in learning more about the TSU expansion feasibility study may contact Kurt Borsting, Titan Student Centers Director, at 657-278-2401.

ASI and Alumni Association Team UpThe Alumni Lounge located in the Titan Student Union (TSU) normally serves as a study space, a spot to take a break between classes, and a meeting place for friends on campus. For 35 years this hub in the student union has welcomed many, and now the space tells the story of our proud Titan alumni. Newly installed showcase panels and display cases feature pictures, stories, and treasures from more than five decades of alumni contributions, helping create Titan Pride. Those visiting the lounge will get to learn about Cal State Fullerton rich past, and see up close authentic pieces that tell the Titan story, including materials used at the first ever "Intercollegiate Elephant Races", the mid-century event that gave Cal State Fullerton its mascot. The lounge also features a uniform and game ball used in the last season of Titan Football. Titan Student Centers Governing Board Chair, Christian Urcia notes, “Through the renovation, we have been able to bring in a story-telling aspect into the space. Urcia continues, “The space will become more dynamic in which students are louder and prouder of the rich CSUF history, excited to become an alumni and embody Titan.” The panel cases along the north wall highlight campus tradition, inspiration, success stories, and news about the alumni association. These rotating cases currently are focusing on athletics, campus life, the Daily Titan campus newspaper and prominent alumni. Updates to the panel cases are planned on a twice-a-year rotation, in order to showcase different members of the CSUF alumni and how they carry Titan Pride beyond the campus. Illuminated display cases along the west facing wall house CSUF artifacts and Titan memorabilia. Treasures now on display include yearbooks from decades past, campus life photos, awards, personal mementos on loan from alums, and much more. In the upcoming months, a timeline element will be installed detailing Cal State Fullerton's chronology since 1957. The display will document early milestones for the campus, its growth over the years, and more recent accomplishments. To view the newly renovated space be sure to visit the Alumni Lounge located next door to the main lobby in the Titan Student Union. |

ASI Goes GreenEnergy efficient lights are now being installed throughout the Titan Student Union (TSU) and Student Recreation Center (SRC). Outside the buildings, state-of-the art LED retrofit fixtures will upgrade all outdoor pedestrian pathway light poles around the student union and SRC. Illuminated walkways, patios around the TSU, SRC and the SRC pool deck will now use dramatically less energy, with long-life lamps expected to burn bright for more than 15 years before needing replacements. In addition to outdoor lighting improvements, several thousands of interior florescent light bulbs will be replaced with brighter, more energy efficient bulbs. These fixtures are located in TSU and SRC offices, hallways, activity spaces, and meeting rooms. The final element of these lighting improvements involve upgrading interior stairwell lights with new hybrid fixtures. These new fixtures use a combination of LEDs, florescent bulbs and motion detection equipment to maximize energy savings when stairwells are not in use. With many of these TSU and SRC offerings open to the public more than 100 hours each week, the energy savings achieved by lighting switch outs will significantly reduce the carbon footprint made by these student life facilities. The cost of these building improvements will be paid back over time by reduced electrical charges, and will be further off-set by Southern California Edison rebates available to the ASI for these improvements.
